About this event: Action Awareness 2004

The Vientiane Youth Centre, Lao Women's Union Vientiane Capital, with support from RHIYA Lao PDR, has organised the event, on 30 December 2004, to commemorate the World AIDS Day 2004. The event was held at the National Stadium with the attendance of more than 2,500 people, the majority of which are young people in Vientiane Capital. This was a big event, thus it would not have happened without support and sponsors from many other local organisations, Govt agencies and private sectors apart from EU/UNFPA RHIYA. The theme of WAD 2004 was "Women, Girls and HIV/AIDS" with the slogan "Have you heard me today?". Honourable speakers and MCs passed on similar messages such as "Be a real man protect me"; "Be a real man respect my rights"; "Protect yourselves, don’t depend on other"; "As you may be aware there is a lack of female-controlled HIV prevention methods, only your confidence and skills can help protect you from HIV infection effectively”. Apart from awareness raising and advocacy, the event entertained people with celebrity football matches and a concert. The concert was considered as a very powerful channel to deliver messages. Interestingly, many of singers in particular from Overdance and Unicon were born from the Vientiane Youth Centre before they become stars, and they were very pleased to be part in this charity event.
